Beeswax layers fused with heat. A durable process widely used in tomb portraits of ancient times.

Fayum Portrait Study

Encaustic on Wood

NFS

Realistically painted portraits on wooden boards attached to mummies from the Coptic period, belong to the tradition of panel painting, one of the most highly regarded forms of art in the Classical world. In fact, the Fayum portraits are the only large body of art from that tradition to have survived.

Here I have a study of one of these portraits that I’ve reproduced with encaustic.

Beeswax is combined with resin which has a higher melting point, giving the wax more durability. Every layer is fused with heat. Colors will not fade and remain true.
